The Sail@ Marina Bay is a high condominium project located in the CBD of down town Singapore. Two towers of mixed residential and retail use, 70 stories and 63 stories were built between 2006 and 2008 over looking Marina Bay on the Singapore water front.
MTM Metalizing coated 133 floors of exposed external emergency staircase for this project. The emergency exit staircase was initially specified to be made out of Aluminium, as it was directly exposed to the elements, but following the rapidly increasing material prices, the prime contractor looked for alternatives for the material. MTM Metalizing proposed a steel staircase, coated with Zinc metalizing. A proto type was constructed and coated and then the project went into full production. The steel elements were made in China, sent to Singapore where they we metalized and then bolted up on site.
Approximately 6,000m2 of steel was coated. The prime contractor was happy as significant cost savings were gained by the material substitution and the unique finish of the zinc coating meant that the stairway did not need to be protected during construction phase, and a “non skid “ coating was built in to the staircase treads and landings. The stairway will last for the design life of the building, without any maintenance required, producing further cost saving for the owner.
