The New York Thruway Authority rehabilitated eight bridges in Erie County near Buffalo. The region, known for its harsh winter climate, requires heavy salt applications to reduce ice build-up to keep the roads safe for travelers. The climatic conditions, combined with salting of roads, led to a rapid deterioration of the steel infrastructure of the bridges.
Using a zinc and aluminum alloy, MTMM’s principle IMC metalized more than 131,800 square feet of new steel that was being used to rehabilitate the bridges, as well as an additional 40,670 square feet of existing steel infrastructure.
The project was started in June 2001 and completed in autumn of 2002. Already, the metalized steel on the bridges is showing superior corrosion protection when compared to other bridges or sections of bridges that were not metalized.
