Case Study New Jersey Department of Transportation

The New Jersey Department of Transportation metalized three structures in 2001, as part of the department's Route 33 Freeway Project. Using pure zinc, MTMM’s principle, IMC metalized a total of 153,231 square feet of steel for the project, which began in March 2001. The metalizing work was performed off site and transported to the site after the metalizing was completed.

This project was part of the United States Department of Transportation's ongoing evaluation of metalizing that began in the late 1980s, which has become one of the most thorough comparisons of metalizing and liquid coatings.

The results of the evaluation were published in the Federal Highway Administration report, “Environmentally Acceptable Materials for the Corrosion Protection of Steel Bridges,” which states: “The best performing systems were the three metalized coatings… [which] displayed near-perfect corrosion performance after 5 to 6.5-year exposure periods.”
